On Thursday, some of the first concrete was poured for the University of Virginia’s Memorial to Enslaved Laborers, which received a formal blessing on Sunday. This concrete, the first permanent step of the memorial, will provide the foundation to support the stone memorial and undergird the rest of the project. In the background, the Rotunda and Brooks Hall provide a sense of scale and place.
